AI Genius Loci is a new game researched and produced in Ukraine which enables players to discern their spirit of place and their own place in the future. The game works not only with human but also artificial intelligence. The title comes from the Latin phrase meaning ‘the guardian spirit of a place’ or ‘the special atmosphere of a place’. 

 

AI Genius Loci was researched and developed by Lanka, a start-up company based in Lviv in western Ukraine. In each of three rounds, called respectively ‘wisdom of the group’, 'big data’, and ‘vision of the future’, players answer questions on intangible heritage, tangible heritage, and natural heritage. Artificial intelligence (AI) plays the role of a fully-fledged participant.

I learned about the game at the New Thinking School, in Kyiv, Ukraine, in September 2024, receiving the English language version in 2025.
